What are Cordyceps?:
Cordyceps are a medicinal mushroom that have been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine for hundreds of years. Traditionally, Cordyceps have been used to support kidney & adrenal gland health; supporting the essence of our vitality. In the wild, it's a parasitic mushroom that grows on catepillars, cicada, and even wasps. Thankfully, humans are not on the menu! Cordyceps belong to the genus "Cordyceps", a genus that contains many different species of parasitic mushrooms, with the Cordyceps in most supplements belonging to the species "militaris". Many athletes have used it to bring their performance beyond baseline. In the supplement industry, Cordyceps are dried, powdered, and/or extracted to concentrate its' benefits as a performance-enhancing and testosterone-boosting mushroom.

Fruiting Body vs Mycelium Debate:
For a while now, the industry has considered fruiting bodies superior to mycelium when it comes to which form of the mushroom's biomass is extracted to produce the most medicinally-potent supplement. Fruiting bodies are the mushrooms that we typically see growing out of the ground or off of a fallen tree or tree stump. Whereas mycelium is the hidden network of fiber-like threads that grow beneath the soil and inside of trees. These mycelium networks grow from millions of germinated mushroom spores and then fruiting bodies grow from these matured mycelium networks once they've intertwined and mated with enough threads of mycelium called hyphae. Both fruiting bodies and their mycelium contain shared medicinal compounds and even their own novel compounds. Although, using mycelium in mushroom supplements is often associated with containing "less" medicinal components and more "fillers", like sawdust substrate and/or the starches that the mycelium grows on. We use exclusively fruiting bodies to ensure the concentration of the mushroom's medicinal components and avoid any fillers that may skew the true weight of our extract's concentration. Mycelium does contain a world of value and novel medicinal components, but until we create a way to isolate & concentrate the benefits without the contamination of substrate, then we'll continue to work with what we know best. Fruiting bodies and their mycelium will be infused in the near future.

Beta Glucan & Terpene Discussion:
Beta Glucans are the soluble fibers found in mushrooms that support the gut microbiome & modulate our body's immune system. Beta Glucans are extracted from the mushroom using water and are often a measure of a mushroom's medicinal activity in a supplement. They are only one part of a mushroom's medicinal value though. Terpenes are medicinal compounds found in mushrooms that support the metabolic function of various organs in our body. Terpenes are typically extracted from mushrooms using alcohol and are often a measure of a mushroom's medicinal activity for supporting our body's metabolic function. A standardized & all-encompassing analytical testing protocol has yet to be established for quantifying these active compounds in mushroom supplements. Until then, it's important for consumers to know a company's extraction method, making sure it's a method that maximizes the process of concentrating these components as best as possible.
We fully purge the alcohol in our extracts to ensure we're using the most concentrated mushroom oleoresin, rich in terpenes, and then perform a water extraction using the most concentrated weight of powdered mushroom fruiting bodies after the alcohol extraction is performed.
